Easy Money Saving Tips

Dan Piergallini

We've already established that we're going to need all the money we can get in the future - so here is a short list of some easy ways to save a few bucks.

  • Buy a water filter and a nalgene instead of bottled water - Not only will you spend less replacing filters (most last anywhere from six months to a year) than you would on bottled water - but you'll also reduce your carbon footprint. Plus a nalgene is virtually indestructable - and I've tried to prove them wrong.
  • Along the same lines, cook your own food, prepare your own coffee - Buying the grounds is cheaper than Starbucks while the ingredients to for your meals are cheaper than the restaurants. And it's also healthier for you.
  • Reduce your cable bill - If you've had your cable/satellite service for roughly a year you can call your service provider and ask for a lower rate. They're going to charge you what they can get, and they will go lower. When I reduced mine I didn't threaten to change services or demand I pay the same lower rate as new customers - I just asked.
  • Get cheap services - Student dental clinics, massage schools, cosmotology schools, etc. all provide services at reduced prices (because you're getting student care). There is the risk of student errors, but they're always supervised by instructors who are generally in the top of their respective fields.
  • Get culture - A lot of museums offer free admission and with a little research it's easy to find free live music (at a variety of venues). Not only is this good for the dating budget, but it will make you seem suave and sophisticated.
  • Find a healthy hobby - A lot of athletic activities require zero to minimal investment - so you'll be spending your time getting healthy instead of your money.
  • Volunteer - Signing up for organizations like the Peace Corps, Teach for America, and so forth often means student loan credits - not to mention that you'll be doing the world a favor.
